Mastering

Several things can be accomplished when mastering audio. Generally speaking, the
primary goal is to achieve sonic consistency which may include but is not limited to:
Dynamic Presentation   Frequency Distribution   Program Continuity

Experienced recording engineers and producers prepare mixes that respond extremely well
in the mastering phase. However, occasionally there are problems that need to be addressed. Perhaps there isn't enough power in "song A" or maybe a section of "scene B" is too quiet. Sometimes the changes are purely elective such as an artist, producer or director revising decisions about how they want a CD or DVD to sound. While songs or scenes may sound good separately, mastering insures all program material involved will work well as a whole.
To put it simply, mastering makes all the audio in a project sound its best from start to finish.
